The Original Resident Evil (1996)

- Developer: Capcom
- Platform: PlayStation (later ported to other platforms)
- Genre: Survival Horror
The original Resident Evil (known as Biohazard in Japan) is the game that defined the survival horror genre. Directed by Shinji Mikami, it introduced players to the chilling world of the Spencer Mansion, a sprawling estate filled with puzzles, traps, and grotesque bio-organic weapons (B.O.W.s) created by the Umbrella Corporation.
Gameplay and Features
Tank Controls: Movement was controlled using a now-iconic “tank” system, where the player turned their character before moving forward or backward.
Fixed Camera Angles: These created a cinematic feel but also heightened tension by obscuring enemies and creating jump-scare opportunities.
Inventory Management: Players had limited inventory slots, forcing tough decisions about what items to carry.
Survival Elements: Scarce resources, including ammunition and health items, emphasized survival over direct combat.
Multiple Characters and Endings: Players could choose between Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, each offering unique scenarios and challenges. Multiple endings added replay value.
Story Overview
Set in 1998, Resident Evil follows members of the S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) Alpha Team—Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, and Albert Wesker—as they investigate a series of gruesome murders in the Arklay Mountains. They take refuge in the Spencer Mansion, only to discover that it is filled with monsters created by Umbrella Corporation’s experiments.
The game’s iconic moments, including the first zombie encounter and the giant snake boss, left a lasting impression on players.
