The Original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999)

- Developer: Capcom
- Platform: PlayStation (later ported to PC, Dreamcast, and GameCube)
- Genre: Survival Horror
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis serves as both a sequel and a prequel to Resident Evil 2, set during the same Raccoon City outbreak. Players take control of Jill Valentine, one of the original protagonists from Resident Evil, as she attempts to escape the zombie-infested city while being relentlessly pursued by Nemesis, a bio-organic weapon (B.O.W.) designed to eliminate S.T.A.R.S. members.
Gameplay and Features
- Pursuit Mechanic: The Nemesis is the game’s defining feature. Unlike other enemies, it follows Jill throughout the game, dynamically appearing to create constant tension.
- Larger Environments: While still linear, the game’s setting expands to include various areas of Raccoon City, giving it a more urban feel compared to the confined spaces of the Spencer Mansion or RPD.
- Live Selection: At key moments, players make timed decisions that affect how the story unfolds, adding replayability and player agency.
- Improved Combat Mechanics: Jill could dodge enemy attacks and perform quick 180-degree turns, giving the player more control in combat situations.
- Resource Management: The introduction of the Gunpowder Mixing system allowed players to craft ammo types, adding a layer of strategy to survival.
- Multiple Endings: The story could conclude differently based on the player’s choices throughout the game.
Story Overview
Set before and after the events of Resident Evil 2, Jill Valentine is attempting to escape Raccoon City after the T-virus outbreak. Along the way, she encounters Carlos Oliveira, a member of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (U.B.C.S.), and learns more about Umbrella’s role in the catastrophe. The Nemesis, a relentless bioweapon, pursues her throughout the game, forcing her to confront both her fears and Umbrella’s experiments.
